T  : What's this?

S1: It's a light.

T  : It's OK, but actually it is a light .... We need another word.

SS: ???

T  : Ok, check the word with your dictionaries.

S3 : bulb!

T  : That's right. It's a light bulb. Then, have a look at the next picture.

T  : What's this?

S4: LED.

T  : Yes, it's a LED light bulb. We are looking at two different lights, but which is better for our environment?

SS: mmmmm...

S5: LED!!

T  : Why?

S5: Ummm... I think it can save energy.

T  : I see. S6, do you agree?

S6: Yes.

T  : S7?

S7: I like a light bulb better.

T  : Oh, really? Why?

S7: I think its shape is cute.

SS: (Laughter)

T  : Now, which is better for our environment, a light bulb or a LED?

(Most of the students chose a light bulb.)

T  : I see. However, I think LED lights are very expensive. It's so hard for us to use them. Don't you think so? Do you use them in your houses? ALL LEDs?

SS: No.

T  : Even though we know they are better than light bulbs, we choose cheaper ones. So, it's important to think how we think of energy. In program 8, we'll think about energy and electricity.

T  : By the way, we have many kinds of energy sources. We use them in Japan, right? In Tochigi, we have many dams. They produce electricity as water power. What's water power?

T  : Right. Anything else?

S9: Fire power.

T  : Ah, I understand what you mean, but it's not fire power, but thermal power. OK? Say it after me. Thermal power.

SS: Thermal power.

T  : What else?

S10: Wind power!

T  : Yes!

S11: Atomic power.

T  : Ah, nuclear power.

S11:Ah, nuclear power.

T  :In our school, we have many big panels.

S12: Solar power!

T  :Yes! Now, please tell me. Which is the best energy source? Raise your hands!

*

T  : Then, which is the cheapest one?

*

T  : Then, which is the safest one?

*

T  : Then, which is the cleanest one?

*

T  : It depends. But thermal power produce much CO2. The electricity is produced from .....

S13: Oil!

T  : Yes. Then, c....

S14: Carbon!

T  : Close, but coal! And. g.....

S15: Gas!

T  : Yes. Oil, coal and gas are found under the ground. We have used them a lot. So, the amount of them is getting less. Getting smaller and smaller. They are all called 'fossil fuels.' What is fossil?

(Students are consulting their dictionaries.)

T  : Yes!  We can find fossils in Shiobara in Tochigi. Fossil fuels are 化石燃料.

1. What is Daisuke making? (A: A wind mill)

2. For Pat, what kind of energy sourse is good for our future?

＊＊＊＊＊

T  : As we learned, Pat and Daisuke think wind power is clean and it can be a good energy sourse in the future. Right? Do you agree?

SS: Yes.

T  : Do you like the noise?

SS: No....

T  : Can you live near this windmill?

SS: ....

T  : We know wind power is one of the cleanest energy sources, but it is not perfect.

SS: ....

T  : There's no perfect answers. We always need to think of the way of choosing the good energy source.
